Our History

In 2003, a concerned group of predominately African American science and business professionals met to discuss the academic and scientific community’s failure to produce a fair representation of minority scientists and entrepreneurs.

They realized the underrepresentation of people of color in bioscience and biomedicine was significant and understood the potential of an all-inclusive scientific community. The group was aware that the most effective way to solve the problem was to find and attract talent at a young age and to create a pipeline of support starting with youth education and moving into entrepreneurial commercialization.

iPRAXIS was created in 2004 and has been working diligently towards creating a more diverse scientific community, starting in Philadelphia.

iPRAXIS Accomplishments for 2010 Program Cycle

- Led science fairs at Belmont Charter, Martha Washington Elementary, Henry C. Lea Elementary, Alain Locke Elementary, Blankenburg Elementary, and  Northwood Academy Charter School.

- Recruited 110 “Scienteers”, 75 of whom served as Science Fair Mentors for a period of teight to twelve weeks.

- More than 550 students in our partner schools were provided the resources needed to complete science fair projects through our Inspire Program.

- Formed new partnerships with Philadelphia Gas Works, the Environmental Protection Agency, Philadelphia Water Department, and the United States Navy. These new relationships have helped to strengthen and diversify our Scienteer pool.
