The Central Valley Council of JDRF is responsible for carrying out the foundation’s mission to “find a cure” for type 1 diabetes in the, Central Valley and the world.

 Our territory spans from the Tehachapi Mountains up to Madera and Inyo counties. The Council is part of the All American Chapter.  Council activities consist of philanthropy and outreach in conjunction with national programs of JDRF. 

The local council is governed by a board of directors responsible for goodwill, philanthropy, and oversight of mission driven activities and an advisory board who assists as needed govern the local council. JDRF has had an office in Bakersfield for 19 years.

Diabetes is a significant problem in our community. Did you know?

  • *Kern County ranks third in the state for diabetes death rate (34.9 per 10,000 residents).
  • ** Over 450 plus cases of Type 1 diabetes was diagnosed in 2015
  • *Diabetes touches nearly one in ten people who live in the Central Valley, compared to one in thirteen statewide.
  • ***1.25M Americans are living with T1D including about 200,000 youth (less than 20 years old) and over a million adults (20 years old and older)1,2,5
  • 40,000 people are diagnosed each year in the U.S.1, 2
  • 5 million people in the U.S. are expected to have T1D by 2050, including nearly 600,000 youth.2,3
  • Between 2001 and 2009 there was a 21% increase in the prevalence of T1D in people
  • T1D is associated with an estimated loss of life-expectancy of up to 13 years7

 The Central Valley Council activities include fundraising through events, individual giving and major gifts, corporations and foundations and providing support to people with type 1diabetes through an extensive Outreach Program. Local council events include:

 

  • JDRF Summer Beer and Wine Fest 6/10/16
  • JDRF One Walk in Bakersfield 11/5/2016 and Fresno 3/25/17
  • MOM-Mom of the Month Family Mentors-on going
  • Bag of Hope for newly diagnosed families-on going
  • Free Support Groups for JDRF Families-on going
  • JDRF School Walks

 Nationally, JDRF’s philanthropic activities for the past 30 years have provided over $2 billion for diabetes.  JDRF has an impressive record of research success – finding and funding the best research leading to a cure, in the most effective way possible.  Always looking to make a bold and immediate impact on the most promising research, JDRF has achieved breakthroughs in five targeted areas: autoimmunity, preventing and reversing complications, islet cell replacement, beta cell regeneration, and achieving metabolic control.  But there is so much more research to be done and new breakthroughs to be discovered.

JDRF Central Valley-Bakersfield needs your help to  raising funds for  our local support group, our school walks and for research to cure T1d.
