Spiderman.  The Hulk. The Avengers.  Hollywood seems to know that we don’t get tired of the hope of a hero to rescue the vulnerable from the villain.  We know in the end the hero wins.  Fear is gone.  And the community rebuilds.

Superheroes seem to appeal to children most of all.  By their very nature, children are the most vulnerable of us all.  They look for protection and safety.  They want to know that everything will be OK.  They need adults they can trust.

Like Julie, an active and healthy preschooler.  Julie liked drawing pictures, running, laughing, and hair bows of any color.

But then Julie became a victim of sexual abuse.  She showed signs of anger, distrust, and defiance.  Her world was not a safe place, and she didn’t like it.

Thankfully, that was not the end of the story.  A whole team of superheroes worked together to restore Julie’s safety.  She told her story.   Her caregivers met with an advocate. She worked on her feelings with a therapist.   All at Judi’s Place for Kids.

Julie was no longer afraid.  Her behavior and learning in the classroom improved.  She was healing and rebuilding from the destruction in her life.  Her life is now back on a path to success, built on safety and trust.

About Us:

Judi’s Place provides free services to child victims of severe physical/sexual abuse and their non-offending family members/caretakers in a child friendly environment. This is possible through the joint efforts of the various professionals that must get involved when a child reports abuse.

The center was founded in 1999 as the Big Sandy Area Child Advocacy Center in Pikeville, KY.  In August 2011, the center was re-named Judi’s Place for Kids in honor of Judi Patton, the Former First Lady of Kentucky.  Mrs. Patton worked to establish a network of 15 child advocacy centers across the state of Kentucky. She continues today as a member of the Judi’s Place for Kids board of directors.
