OUR VISION

The Kaniksu Land Trust’s vision is that 100 years from now, there will still be:
• Large tracts of undeveloped land to provide critical habitat for all species.
• A permanent land base to sustain vibrant, varied agriculture and forestry.
• Community access to natural areas for recreation and outdoor activities.
• Pristine waterways such as Lake Pend Oreille, the Clark Fork River and their tributaries.
• Sustained economic vitality due to well-balanced conservation and development.

THE THREATS

People are drawn to this region by its stunning beauty, wildlife and recreational opportunities. Yet we risk losing these things as more people bring increased development, creating urban sprawl and habitat fragmentation. This development, while inevitable, has negative impacts on the natural systems. It also undermines the quality of life in this spectacular region by impacting access to recreation and the stunning scenic vistas.

The Kaniksu Land Trust is not anti-development. We realize that growth is necessary. Our goal is to find a balance between growth and preservation. This will result in a vibrant community with ample opportunity for economic prosperity while protecting those areas that are important for maintaining a healthy standard of living for all residents.
