Kawasiwajo Community Land Trust

🌱 Our Mission, Vision & Values

Founded in 2022, Kawasiwajo Community Land Trust (KCLT) is a nonprofit based in Warner, New Hampshire. Our mission is to foster resilience and connection in the Kearsarge region by addressing the intersections of land, housing, and community. We envision a future where land is stewarded collectively, housing is affordable and stable, and both farmland and forests are accessible to those who care for them. Our core values include:

  • Community EmpowermentWe believe in grassroots decision-making and community-led initiatives.

  • AffordabilityWe aim to create and maintain affordable housing options that serve the needs of our community.

  • Land Justice: We prioritize Indigenous land access and recognize the Abenaki people as the original stewards of this territory.

  • Conservation: We are committed to preserving open spaces, wetlands, and forests for ecological health and community well-being.

🏡 The Foster Farm Capital Campaign

Foster Farm, located in the historic Joppa District of Warner on Abenaki land, is our pilot project. In October of 2020, a generous individual purchased this 70-acre property, surrounded by the conserved lands of the Mink Hills, with the intent of working with KCLT to take over ownership within the next couple of years. This would jumpstart KCLT's mission-driven work in the region! Since then, KCLT members, volunteers, and the current owner have been restoring the property.

KCLT has a unique opportunity: if we can raise 25% of the appraised value of Foster Farm, the current owner will donate the remaining 75% of the property's equity to KCLT.

Our plans for Foster Farm include:

  1. Affordable Housing: Maintaining and expanding housing options within the farmhouse.

  2. Land Conservation: Protecting sensitive wetlands and forest habitats through conservation efforts.

  3. Indigenous Land Access: Establishing a Cultural Easement with Abenaki partners to ensure perpetual access for cultural and spiritual practices.

  4. Farmland Access: Collaborating with farmers to revitalize the land and potentially rebuild the old barn.

The success of this campaign will not only secure Foster Farm, providing immediate equity, but also seed KCLT with the financial stability and the tools to find additional mission driven ways to serve the community through housing and land access in the Kearsarge region.
