About the Kay Yow Cancer Fund

The late, Kay Yow, namesake of the Fund and former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 before passing away on January 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease.

Kay Yow was a legendary Hall of Fame coach that was able to instill camaraderie in her players and now has done the same in the cancer community with the creation of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. To help others Coach Yow wanted to raise funds for scientific research and couple these research projects with clinical trials and experimental drugs because she believed the last 4 years of her life she was not only able to live but to live with quality as a result of these research projects.

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund has allocated the following research grants as a result of the overwhelming generosity of its supporters: $1M research grant to Leisha A. Emens, M.D., Ph.D. at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at John Hopkins in Baltimore, MD / $100,000 research grant to Rajeshwar Rao Tekmal, Ph.D. at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in San Antonio, TX / $100,000 research grant to Michael Welch, Ph.D. and John Stephen Taylor, Ph.D. at Siteman Cancer Center at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO.
