MISSION: The Kentucky Environmental Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to securing solutions to environmental problems in a manner, which safeguards human health, promotes environmental justice, preserves ecological systems and encourages sustainability. We currently have three program areas: Clean Energy, Safe Chemicals, and Safe Chemical Weapons Disposal.
Clean Energy - Pollution from fossil fuels has a direct impact on our air, water and health. Kentucky's reliance on these energy sources threatens our environment, well-being and economy. Clean energy solutions will help protect Kentucky's families, preserve its environment for future generations, and strengthen and diversify local economies. KEF uses health-based education, research, organizing to
reduce diseases and health disparities, and promote resilience and sustainability by reducing pollution and securing clean energy.
Safe Chemicals – Toxic chemical exposures in the air, water and common household products and materials are linked to many health problems and chronic disease. KEF is committed to reducing disease and health disparities by promoting changes in our behavior, in the marketplace, and in policy initiatives that take toxics out of our bodies and inspire use of safer solutions.
Chemical Weapons - KEF has since 1990 been a local, national and international leader in safe, effective demilitarization of chemicals weapons stored at the Blue Grass Army Depot. Currently KEF’s Chemical Weapons Working Group Project Director serves as a community leader in oversight of chemical weapons disposal activities at all phases of decision making through the Chemical
Demilitarization Community Advisory Board and the Citizens Advisory Commission, and as a liaison to elected officials at all levels of government and; local and regional economic development and business groups; international advocacy and governing bodies; and other community stakeholders to ensure that worker safety, community health and environmental protection remain top priorities throughout the demilitarization effort and beyond.
