The Kentucky Equine Humane Center (the Center) was started in 2006 to provide shelter for unwanted equines in Kentucky.  It operates out of a 72 acre farm in the Lexington area and has handled over 700 horses since it opened its doors.

Horses are surrendered to the Center for a wide variety of reasons - abandonment, neglect or abuse, as well as for financial and health reasons on the part of the owner.  Consider the case of an owner in Kentucky who had 30+ horses that were surrendered to the Center because she was losing her home.  Several of the horses found their way to the KyEHC.  Or consider the owner who had cancer and could no longer care for her horses.  Both owners made the difficult and emotional decision to surrender their horses to the Center.

One Animal Control officer called the KyEHC to say that they had seized some abandoned ponies and needed to place them somewhere.  Both ponies arrived at the Center and one had a foal born shortly afterwards.

The Center takes in these horses in need, and attends to their physical and emotional needs.  All horses are examined by a licensed veterinarian and receive their vaccinations, as well as farrier and dental care.  They also receive basic training from the onsite trainer, so that they are ready to be adopted.

Finding an adoptive home is the goal for each horse. Prospective adopters are thoroughly screened and the Center staff works diligently to place the right horse with the right adopter.  An average of 50-60 horses are adopted each year.
