An average of 120 volunteers each month, donated more than 17,000 hours in 2015.
This year we are celebrating 50 years of transforming lives through literacy.
Kern Literacy Council has been leading the way to build a stronger and smarter Kern County via literacy since 1966!
Our programs include ESL Education, Tutoring, Citizenship Classes and our newest hit, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Since our launch with Dolly in September 2023, over 7,000 kids in Kern now receive 1 new book a month for 1 year!
You can help us build those numbers with a donation on several of our levels of giving this year!

We thank you for considering KLC when giving this year!
The mission of Kern Literacy Council is to empower individuals to improve the quality of their lives through literacy education. We provide free and confidential one-to-one tutoring in reading, ESL, GED test preparation, and citizenship test prep. We provide small group teaching of ESL, reading, and reading strategies for parents of pre-school and elementary school students. Services have been online since May 2021. In-person services will resume when Bakersfield City School District returns to in-person school.
