Only a small part of the world’s population is deeply educated. Only 85% of primary school students worldwide graduate from primary school, and these completion statistics get worse as students move on towards higher education. As an example, in the United States:

Only 75% of US high-school students graduate on time (this reaches a low of 61% for African American students)

43% of US college students will not graduate in 6 years

25% of US college freshmen need remedial classes, costing $3B annually.

The overall unemployment rate for recent graduates is 7.9%, and at least half of recent graduates are working in jobs that do not require a degree

The education crisis is a complex, multi-faceted problem that requires many multi-pronged solutions. Not enough students are given the opportunity to learn and grow so that they can be productive members of society. It is thus time to rethink the underlying assumption of whether our traditional educational model works and how we can make more effective models available to students around the world.

But there's a solution!

Khan Academy is a 501(c)3 non-profit with a mission of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education for anyone, anywhere. We believe that students of all ages should have free, unlimited access to top-notch educational content on any topic, and that they should be able to consume and master this content at their own pace. In addition, we believe that there are incredible opportunities to use intelligent software development, deep data analytics and intuitive user interfaces to more effectively surface and present these educational resources to students and teachers around the world.

We provide thousands of free lessons (practice exercises, instructional videos, written articles) from basic Math to college level Biology and Art History, together with enabling tools (learning dashboards, teacher resources) for students and teachers to personalize their learning and teaching. We have delivered over 300 million videos and 1.9 billion exercise problems. Today, Khan Academy has 10 million students per month and is used by over 1,000,000 teachers in ~200 countries around the world. 

Our small team of ~100 reached over 100 million students in 2015. Our goal is to raise funds to get us through the next few years so that we can truly focus on building and proving out our vision of what free, personalized education can be. In addition, we also need to be able to show students, teachers and educational institutions that we are a lasting organization that they can trust will be around for the long term.

We are now seeking more committed partners who align with our mission and philosophy and can support us with multi-year pledges. This will allow us the flexibility and support to focus on major developments without the need to compromise or exclude features due to financial constraints – this is what will help us achieve our mission of a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere.
