Kids & Horses

Empowering children and adults with special needs is a unique and important mission that is largely unfulfilled in the Northern Nevada community. Kids and Horses is a non-profit corporation that has offered therapeutic riding programs as a bridge for children and adults with disabilities since 1999.  The Kids & Horses facility in Minden, Nevada, is a North American Riding for the Handicap Association (NARHA) Premier Accredited Center. It is the only center of its kind in northern Nevada.

Instructors are certified and have training through NARHA, a national organization that provides leadership, operating standards, safety rules, regulations and insurance coverage for approved centers. Kids & Horses offers one-on-one individually tailored riding lessons to improve strength, coordination and self-esteem of students.

Kids & Horses’ scholarship programs allow children in need to receive assistance. Currently, fifty-percent of students are on scholarship. 

Kids & Horses scholarships are very important to our students and their families.

A grandmother of a scholarship recipient wrote: "Our 10 year-old granddaughter was born with spina bifida and has balance issues along with mental behavioral problems. When she first started in the program, she had a death hold on the saddle and was scared. Since then with the help of all of the volunteers and instructors, she can ride relaxed with no hands and even started to trot!"

A mother of another one of our scholarship recipients wrote: "Kids & Horses has been a life changing experience for our son. He has autism and we have tried so many programs that didn't work. Taking the riding lessons has given him freedom and self-accomplishment. We never thought we would see that."
