KIPP DC is a network of high-performing, public, college-preparatory charter schools in Washington, D.C., which serves the city’s under-resourced communities. At KIPP DC, there are no shortcuts. Outstanding educators, more time in school, a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum, and a strong culture of achievement and support help our students make significant academic gains and continue to excel in high school and college.

In 2001, founder Susan Schaeffler and a team of dedicated educators established KIPP DC’s first school, KEY Academy middle school, in a church basement in Anacostia. Beginning with 80 5th graders, KEY Academy has grown to become one of the highest-performing public middle schools in the District. Due to the outstanding success of KEY Academy, KIPP DC expanded to reach more students. In 2007, KIPP DC began to imagine what could be achieved if students never faced the achievement gap and started its first early childhood school. Currently, KIPP DC reaches more than 2,600 students in nine schools at three campuses in D.C.’s Marshall Heights, Anacostia, and Shaw neighborhoods. Next year, we will open our tenth school, an elementary school, and our network will consist of three early childhood schools, three elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school. By 2015, KIPP DC will serve 3,500 students.
