Kitsap Aikido

Kitsap Aikido has been part of the Kitsap community for over 25 years.  During that time, our efforts have been to confront conflict, non-confrontationally by using the tactics of Aikido.

Aikido is a Japanese martial art, dedicated to the art of managing conflict.  Aikido focuses on using your opponents energy to gain control.  There is a great deal of motion and movement, primarily smooth spiral movement with no sense of conflict, no winners, no losers.  There is no competition in aikido, no matches, no sparing.

Aikido is a beautiful way to combat bullying and aggression in any form including verbal.   Aikido emphasizes awareness. This is an awareness of self as well as others.  This awareness of what is going on around you allows for an inner strength, or preparedness that manifests in sensitivity to the opponents intension.  Once you know another's intention, it is quite simple to re-direct that intention without harming anyone.  Children find it easy to train in Aikido as they have a natural ability to detect intent.

The structure of Aikido is martial.  We use this form when training and this is what you see.  What you feel during your training is the awareness and connection; this is not seen, only felt.

The result is usually individuals develop more empathy, confidence and inter-personal awareness as well as the skills to manage conflict.
