Knickerbocker Community Center

The mission of the Knickerbocker Community Center is to preserve the history of the Knickerbocker School, maintain the structural soundness of the building, and to enrich the Knickerbocker and surrounding communities through it's public and private use.

The Knickerbocker Community Center was built in 1926 as a school house for children in the community of Knickerbocker, the surrounding area along Dove Creek, and extending toward Tankersley. This building replaced a frame school house that had been constructed in 1889. The new red brick building provided 3 classrooms, an auditorium and a central hall for students. The Knickerbocker school educated children until 1960 when area rural schools consolidated. This almost 100 year old building still has it's beautiful auditorium with original wood floors and wooden chairs. The central hall separates the auditorium from what was once a classroom but was converted to serve as an event center for the community. The remaining portion of the school is now home to the Knickerbocker Post Office. The Knickerbocker Community Center hosts many events throughout the year. It is available at no charge for community wide events and is available to rent for private use.

This building is a gathering place for not only people with a connection to Knickerbocker, but for people throughout Tom Green County. We host Christmas, Easter, and Fall Festival events annually which are attended by people from all over. Each summer our annual fundraiser, Knicky Picky, takes place. Guests are able to shop vendors, eat burgers and hot dogs, have goodies from food trucks, play games like corn hole and horse shoes, listen to live entertainment under the pavilion all day, and dance under the stars that night to music from favorite local bands. We have hosted candidate forums for local races, meetings for school bond elections, been the headquarters for the Safari Trail Ride, and numerous other events that benefit countless individuals, families and groups.

The Knickerbocker Community Center is vibrant, relevant, and an important part of the lives of many individuals, families, and groups.
