You’ve probably heard about the Lions Clubs, but may not be aware of how we support our local communities.  For instance, in the first year of the La Pine Lions “Cans for a Cause” Honor Flight program, we sent an Oregon WWII veteran to Washington DC This may not sound like much, but at a nickel each, that’s a lot of recycled cans and bottles!   Plus we’ve expanded our “Cans for a Cause” program to help fund additional Lions projects.

These are other examples of how the La Pine Lions Club supports our community:

  • Through “Vision” - La Pine Lions work diligently to raise funds to provide lower income residents with eye examinations, eyeglasses and hearing aids.   By collecting and recycling eyeglasses and hearing aids we actively work to improve the sight and hearing for individuals worldwide.  Our club provides annual sight and hearing tests to our La Pine and Sunriver grade and middle school children.
  • Through “Youth” - La Pine Lions award college scholarship grants in support our local La Pine High School seniors.  Our Dimes for Diabetes Fund allows us to send a middle school student to On Belay’s Type 1 Diabetes camp at Camp Tamarack in Sisters.   We proudly sponsor the Cub and Boy Scout Troops in La Pine.   The Flags for First Graders program provides a forum for our club to discuss the history of the American flag and patriotism with our La Pine and Sunriver first graders.
  • Through “Hunger” - La Pine Lions volunteer at the La Pine St Vincent de Paul’s food pantry and La Pine Community Kitchen.  Through our involvement with the Cascade Lakes Relay, we provide food and financial assistance to both the La Pine Community Kitchen and American Red Cross organizations.
  • Through “Environment” - La Pine Lions planted Ponderosa Pine seedlings and volunteer for the Clean-up La Pine Day.

One thing is for certain; all these programs require a continued source of volunteers and financial support.  Our clubs primary financial support comes from our concession trailer.  It was donated to us years ago, but is aging rapidly, and no longer meets our food service standards or needs.   The trailer must be replaced in order for our club to continue funding our community programs.  We’ve set an aggressive goal to have a new trailer in operation by the start of the 2016 event season.  A new, fully equipped, Class IV concession trailer costs $15,000 – $18,000 and we need your help to achieve it.

I’m very proud of the service our La Pine Lions Club provides to our community.  Your donation today would be greatly appreciated and will assist the club in continuing its service and support of our community programs.
