Musicians love to play their chosen instrument, any time, any place. But, the best time and place is whenever and where ever they can find other musicians with all the different instruments it takes to make a full band. Student musicians have access to a school band, but adults had no access to a band until 1998 when the Lake Havasu Symphonic Winds was formed by Wes Humphrey.

Today 33 musicians between the ages of 16 and 80 share their love of music at weekly rehearsals where they practice to perform several public concerts each year. Some musicians are retired music directors who enjoy playing again. Some are adults who have continued to play since they were in school. Some had no time for music for many years but have dusted the instrument off and want to play again. Some are high school band students who are expanding their expertise. Kim Wilson is the current conductor of this diverse and talented group.

The music the Winds perform is as diverse as its members.  There are concert band standards like marches and classics, but also Broadway and movie tunes, jazz, swing, popular hits, and holiday favorites. Concert programs are usually planned around a theme and may feature guest directors, musicians, dancers, or singers. Band members are frequent soloists.

The Winds is the only live, full-size band in Lake Havasu City, and it strives to provide economical well-played music for Lake Havasu’s residents and visitors. Winter visitors frequently comment that the Winds and other arts events are the reason they choose Lake Havasu City each winter. Adult tickets are only $10. The organization and Board of Directors is especially eager to share live music with children and encourage their interest, so children with a parent and students with a school ID are admitted free. The organization is currently trying to establish a youth band for 5th and 6th graders.

The musicians, board of directors, and concert support staff are volunteers. The organization does have expenses for music, stage apparel, auditorium fees, insurance, publicity, tickets, and programs. The Winds is supported through ticket sales, a grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, and donations like yours.
