Las Vegas Urban League

The National Urban League, founded in 1910, is the premier social service and civil rights organization in America. The organization which has played a pivotal role in the 20th-Century Freedom Movement, grew out of that spontaneous grassroots movement for freedom and opportunity that came to be called the Black Migrations.

The Las Vegas Urban League was established in 2003, by local philanthropist Jacqulyn Shropshire. Her mission was to empower communities and ensure equal opportunity for low-income people throughout Clark County. In July 2006, the Las Vegas Urban League was designated by the State of Nevada as the Community Action Agency for Clark County.

The Las Vegas Urban League is one of the more than one hundred affiliates of the National Urban League nationwide. It is an independent 501(c)(3) organization serving disadvantaged persons in Southern Nevada.

We continue to honor Mrs. Shropshire’s vision by providing economic, social, and environmental solutions that lead to self-sufficiency.  Our mission is to enable persons striving towards full participation in mainstream society to achieve economic self-reliance and enjoy their rights as equal citizens under the law.

Today the League's work is focused in three primary areas: education, economic development and community empowerment.
