Conservative pundit George Will said this about the nation’s largest minority: "The most striking fact about the disabled population is that it is the most inclusive. I will never be black, and I will never be a woman, but I could become disabled on the drive home tonight."

It’s very true that at any time, any of us -- friends, loved ones, neighbors or we ourselves -- can find a need for temporary or permanent help to continue to live independently, on our own, without resorting to living in an institution. Nearly one American in five, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 57 million people, experience disabilities.

And yet, despite the numbers and the laws guaranteeing them equal rights, people with disabilities often find themselves struggling to overcome barriers between themselves and independence.

The League of Human Dignity is here to help remove those barriers, to help people with disabilities achieve and maintain their independence. We work on the principle that people with disabilities have the right to expect equal opportunity to live, work and play in their community; to access benefits, services, resources and facilities; and to contribute freely according to their potential, regardless of their disabilities. They should never be forced to live in institutions.

The League offers many services in this regard, including:

Independent living skill training – tailored to individual needs, group or individual training that helps people with disabilities live independently.

Peer counseling and support— an opportunity for consumers to network with and learn from those with common experiences and similar disabilities.

Transition – help making the transition from institutions and into the community or preventing, if possible, a move into an institution.

Individual and systems advocacy – helping people learn to be their own advocates and obtain the services they need.

Information and referral – providing information on disability-related issues, finding answers to questions and referring our consumers to other organizations and programs that may provide what they need.

Training in the hiring and management of personal service providers.

Barrier removal – helping make homes and buildings accessible to people with disabilities.

Durable medical equipment loan and rental.

Extended Hours Service (EHS) Transportation program – accessible, affordable transportation after city buses and HandiVans have ended their business day.

Each donation you make to the League of Human Dignity is an investment in your community and will be used right here in Lincoln to provide help to your friends, loved ones and neighbors who need it. Since 1971, we have been committed to providing quality services that aid and make possible the independent living of our consumers and with your help we will continue to do so.
