New Voices for Youth is a program of the League of Women Voters.

About New Voices for Youth
NV4Y was founded in 2006 when two local Leagues came together to connect with young people. We want to promote civic engagement!

NV4Y helps youth create videos about what’s important; prejudice, college, pregnancy, the environment, public art and foster care.

Local Leagues of Women Voters started NV4Y in 2006 but, until recently, provided no financial support.

How New Voices for Youth Works
NV4Y is an afterschool program based in two different sites:

  • Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton
  • Siena Youth Center in the North Fair Oaks community of Redwood City.

Participants come from East Palo Alto, East Menlo Park and Redwood City to learn how to make videos.  Then, they do it! They frame questions, collect B-roll, interview subjects, edit tape, add music, add titles and finally, they present and screen their work for family and friends at each site.

NV4Y also offers workshops about making videos to local non-profits.

Why you should contribute now

Youth with video cameras don’t produce lasting work alone!

  • They need feedback, encouragement and equipment.
  • They need to learn about focusing, panning and using cameras on tripods and about loading and editing video on computers.
  • NV4Y staff helps youth stay engaged and tell strong stories.

NV4Y depends on contributions from individuals and local foundations. NV4Y is a small but vibrant addition to youth in underserved communities in Palo Alto, Menlo Park and Redwood City.
