The Lemhi County Humane Society owns and operates the Salmon Animal Shelter. Each year we help find new homes for hundreds of cats and dogs, as well as the occaisonal pig, ferret, or goat.

In addition to providing companion animals with high quality sheltering services, we also offer public low-cost spay and neuter clinics on a twice yearly basis. Each year we help spay and neuter approximately 150 dogs, which helps lower  the numbers of unwanted animals at our shelter. We also trap, spay, and neuter feral cats in and near the city of Salmon on a regular basis.

Finally, we are the first line of defense against animal abuse and neglect in the county. We have helped numerous animals, specifically dogs and horses, by providing food and  shelter during tough times. Most often people are willing to work directly with us, however we bring in local law enforcement if necessary.

The 2013/2014 winter was a tough one in terms of high hay prices, poor economy, and cold weather. We worked through two exceptionally difficult cases of horse abuse/neglect - one where a starving horse was litererally found frozen to the ground, and another involving 16 horses - one that died and many other that were slowly starving. Without our intervention the loss would have been much greater.

We are currently looking ahead to the 2014/2015 winter when, once again, we expect to deal with a good number of horse abuse/neglect cases in the county. Funds raised during this event will be specifically earmarked for the purchase of hay and grain, to be set aside for next winter's use.
