Little Falls Watershed Alliance Inc

The Little Falls Watershed Alliance is an all-volunteer organization commited to protecting our fragile local environment.  

Located in densely populated area of NW Washington DC and lower Montgomery County, Maryland, the 9 square mile Little Falls watershed is home to three creeks - the Little Falls Branch, the Willet Branch and the Minnehaha Branch. While most of the area is houses and business, the 160 acre Little Falls Stream Valley Park runs through the heart of the watershed as does the popular Capital Crescent bike trail.  We also have seven other small recreation areas.

The Little Falls Watershed Alliance mission is to protect this fragile environment.   We run over 40 events each year, plenty of opportunities to do you part and help in our efforts to repair the water, restore the land, revive our woods and clean our parks. We invite you to join us in stewardship of our watershed.

Help Us with Meadow Restoration

We are in phase two of a stream-side meadow restoration near Westbrook Elementary School.  Replacing the grass with native shrubs, flowers and trees will provide a habitat for birds and other wildlife, as well as hold the soil in place and keep the rain water from running off into the stream. 

Goats

Trees and native shrubs in our parks are being strangled and crowded out by invasive vines and bushes.  When it comes to clearing unwanted vegetation, goats can provide an ideal alternative to machines and herbicides. They graze in places that mowers can't reach and humans don't want to go and they eat everything.  We are raising money to bring goats to the park to clear out land for restoration.

Help Us with Storm Drain Labels

Only rain should go in the storm drains as anything that is put in the storm drain goes directly to the creek.  Simple labels help to remind people.  We have labeled more than 1,000 storm drains in the watershed, but we still have a lot to do.
