What is the mission of Liberty’s Promise (LP)?
We support young immigrants in need while encouraging them to be active and conscientious American citizens. Our programs aim to make the immigrant experience an affirmative one for young newcomers while instilling in them a sense of pride and support for American ideals of democracy and freedom.
How many immigrant youth has LP served?
To date, we've served over 3,800 immigrant youth in need, ages 15-21, from 117 countries.
Where does LP work?
- Virginia: City of Alexandria, Fairfax County and Arlington County
- Maryland: Montgomery County, Prince George’s County and City of Baltimore
- Washington, DC
What does LP do?
- Civics and Citizenship – The program is held after-school in NINETEEN locations across the region. Youth meet their elected officials and successful immigrants, and they take field trips in their community. The program increases youths’ school attendance, engagement, community involvement, and self-esteem. This program is completely free for youth, and LP provides a meal for youth at each session and covers their transportation expenses.
- Civic Engagement for Beginning English-Language Learners (CE-BELL)- A Spanish- language version of our Civics and Citizenship program held at five locations in region that is also free for the youth and provides meals and transportation expenses.
- Opportunities Plus – This program places our youth in a six to eight-week professional internship with local businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits. Prior to their placement, youth participate in a job skills workshop, where they develop a cover letter, resume, and interview skills. LP provides participants with a modest allowance to cover their expenses of this unpaid internship. Youth have interned at the Adventist Hospital, Gilchrist Center, Empowered Women International, Fairfax County Library, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Youth have gained professional skills, workplace knowledge, and confidence in their abilities through this program.
- Anything & Everything! We help our participants, and by extension their families, with everything including job opportunities, youth leadership programs, scholarships, financial aid programs, housing, legal sercvies, volunteer opportunities, and on and on.
What are LP's outcomes?
- 99.1% of our participants finish high school and more than 70% enroll in college. These figures are far above the national average for low-income youth.
- Final evaluations from our most recent after-school program semester indicate that 90.3% of youth felt more involved in their community, 97.5% felt more prepared for college, and 95.2% felt more prepared for a job after participating in our programs.
- We have directly connected our youth to more than $2.1 million in scholarships!
