Litchfield Historical Society

$15,300 raised by 110 donors

We make the past usable, connecting our community and audiences with their history and culture to chart a way forward.

The Litchfield Historical Society (LHS) is dedicated to sharing the history and culture of the Town of Litchfield, Connecticut, through dynamic exhibits, diverse programs and events, representative collections, and publicly accessible resources. LHS comprises the Litchfield History Museum, Helga J. Ingraham Research Library, Tapping Reeve House and Litchfield Law School, and Tapping Reeve Meadow.

Since 1856, LHS has been an invaluable resource for making the history of the Town of Litchfield publicly accessible. The diverse stories of the community – including the history of the Litchfield Law School, America’s first law school – have state, national, and international significance. Through projects, initiatives, resources, and collaborations, the community of Litchfield and its visitors are engaged in explorations of the past. They are inspired to share their stories and listen to those of others. These interactions result in a collective appreciation that all experiences have value and support an engaged citizenry.

We rely on the generosity of our supporters for a large portion of our budget. Donations during Give Local support our mission to make the past usable, going a long way in making our work in the community possible.

We hope you will join us for an upcoming walking tour, lecture, or visit to the museum soon! Find our upcoming events on our website calendar at: www.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org/calendar

Who We Are

The mission of the Litchfield Historical Society is to illuminate the rich and nationally-significant history of Litchfield, enabling each of us to construct meaning from the past for the present and future. The Litchfield Historical Society brings people together to discover, experience, and share the many diverse stories that have made our community a distinctive place, now and over time.
