The Literacy Council of West Alabama is committed to rebuilding lives and communities through the power of literacy.  One of the best ways to accomplish this goal is through creating Family Learning Centers in neighborhoods across West Alabama.

Our goal is to provide full service learning centers to communities with extremely high need and low literacy levels. Centers create a leadership discourse of shared problem-solving that leads to increased literacy levels and unites families and communities to promote the vision of 100 percent literacy through 100 percent community engagement.

Community literacy includes all family members and all community stakeholders with a vested interest in a highly literate community to promote personal success, as well as economic, educational and social justice.  The power of collaboration can impact the success of literacy service delivery in many ways. Collaboration

  • encourages multiple and wrap around services and one-stop provision.
  • provides coordination of service delivery with diversity of service provision.
  • creates sector and interagency alliances.
  • brings success to scale.
  • links grass roots initiatives to broader community goals.
  • supports regionalism, leverages funding, and integrates education and economic development.

The national trend toward community literacy coalitions has promoted collaborative service delivery, marketing, outreach, accountability, technical assistance and evaluation.  We will work with service providers, faith-based organizations and other groups to best serve these communities.  With your help, we will not simply rebuild communities devastated by the April 27 tornadoes, but rebuild better communities.
