Literacy Volunteers on the Green, Inc., celebrates 21 years of providing free
English literacy instruction to adults residing in northern Fairfield and
Litchfield counties. Welcoming adult learners from over 25 countries, LVG guides adult students as they strive to become independent readers,
writers, listeners and speakers of English, enabling their full participation
in the communities we share. The LVG community consists of 2 staff,
an engaged Board of Directors, dedicated volunteer tutors, students eager to
learn, and generous donors giving at all monetary levels. Each sector
operates with enthusiasm to foster students' abilities to communicate
effectively in everyday life, to succeed in the workplace, and to support
families through English literacy.

85 tutor/student learning teams
meet in various locations each week providing a high
standard of excellence in adult learning. 85+ trained, volunteer tutors support
over 185 adult students in their journey towards attaining their goals of vocational training, full employment, improved self - confidence, defining a career pathway/vocational training, and a broad spectrum of community-based opportunities available through strong literacy skills. Free curriculum materials support effective learning specifically targeting the needs of the adult student's individual goals identified at intake and assessment.

LVG continues to partner with community service organizations - area libraries, refugee resettlement groups, social service departments, and local adult education programs in Danbury and
New Milford to offer the following programs: English language classes; basic skills remediation in reading and writing at all levels; US citizen preparation; and family literacy initiatives, partnering with Laundry Love, a national nonprofit offering free laundry services. LVG donates a box of children's books each month, emphasizing the importance of building daily family reading time. Two community tutoring collaborations underscore adult literacy relevance - LVG tutors offer onsite English classes to clients of Ann's Place, a cancer- support center, and parents of children enrolled in Danbury Grassroots Academy receive Wednesday evening English classes - meeting the needs of adult learners in our communities.

As a member of ProLiteracy America, LVG administrative professionals and tutors avail themselves of best practices in adult learning by attending webinars on learning engagement and trainings for all levels of literacy. LVG connects with other Connecticut Literacy Volunteer organizations, sharing strategies for creating
a sustainable student-centered literacy organization. Tutors are offered quarterly professional development opportunities, through workshops, curriculum support and coaching, as well as monthly Zoom meetings offering a forum for sharing creative ideas to improve tutoring sessions.

LVG students and tutors reside in communities throughout northwestern CT - from from Danbury, Bethel, Brookfield, and Sherman, in upper Fairfield county to New Milford, Bridgewater, Roxbury, Woodbury, Southbury, Washington, Kent, Warren, Bantam, and Litchfield in Litchfield County. Literacy Volunteers on the Green Inc., thanks the Connecticut Community Foundation for their
continuing support and the opportunity to participate in the April
2026 Give Local Campaign!
