This year, LBFE celebrates 25 years providing caring and consistent life-enriching friendships and support to isolated women and men in San Francisco.

An estimated 30,000 people over 65 live alone in San Francisco. Growing old, alone, without the support of family and friends, elders can feel trapped in their homes because of financial hardship, health challenges, especially loss of hearing, sight and mobility, or fear of street violence if they do venture outside. Even elders living in senior housing are marginalized from the community at large.

Many feel invisible. Of no value.

LBFE is the only organization working to alleviate the poverty of spirit suffered by this frail and marginalized population.

Without LBFE, elders have few - if any- personal, meaningful interactions with people who want to spend time with them. Birthdays and holidays pass unnoticed. 

LBFE is a lifeline. Every day, staff and volunteers reach out by phone and in person and connect them with people who care for and about them. Elders know they can depend on LBFE when there is no-one else to turn to.

This is why LBFE's year-round programs of matched friends, in-home visits, luncheon parties, excursions, and birthday visits are so appreciated! And LBFE is the only organization that provides free personal escorts and transportation to and from medical appointments in San Francisco!

Regular events and new experiences give elders something to anticipate, and the joy of sharing new (and enduring) friendships boost their spirits. They feel connected to a community of friends they trust, that they can count on.

As a volunteer-based organization, LBFE can only do this important work with the generous support of donors and the commitment of the many volunteers who give thousands of hours every year.
