LEAF was founded in 2009 when eight people came together to build a vibrant local food economy. With our eyes set on the California Nursery Historical Park as an urban farm location, we focused our mission around building community through learning and action that promote sustainability and local food.

Working with an extensive network of community groups and non-profits, LEAF performs three main activities: 1) growing plants at our nursery, 2) running workshops on organic gardening and 3) providing space to garden for those with limited access to soil. Our work is helping our 600 community members reconnect with the land and build community together.

For the past few years LEAF has been working a ¼ acre parcel in downtown Niles in Fremont. Now we have an opportunity to move to the California Nursery Historical Park site. There has been a nursery on the site nearly continuously since 1884, providing plants to famous estates like Hearst Castle back when the population of California was much smaller.

With architectural drawings in hand, LEAF simply needs to raise the last $31,000 by July 31, 2013 in order to submit permits to the City and start construction at the new site this summer. We plan to plant our first winter garden this fall.

We invite you to be part of this momentous occasion. Your help can put us over the top so we can create a beautiful community site that will ensure food security for future generations.
