Laughing on the Inside Inc

Laughing on the Inside, Inc. is a nonprofit helping incarcerated women build confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of community. In our current initiative, we take comedy instructors into women's prisons and jails to teach the inmates how to create their own stand-up and improvisational comedy. We partner with the San Francisco Comedy College whose instructors teach the classes with an encouraging and collaborative tone, and at the end of the weekend workshop, the women put on a comedy show for their peers and the prison staff.

This year, our founder consulted on a short video by Moving Art for Oprah.com. The subject was a weekend workshop structured on the Laughing on the Inside model. The depth of emotions, personal growth and sheer joyfulness of the women in this video is exactly how our incarcerated students experience our free services. Our website has several eloquent letters written by women inmates requesting our classes. It also has a blog, information on how we got started, and an In Memoriam page.
