I’d like to tell you about two remarkable seniors who are thriving with the help of Caregivers. These two ladies, Lillian and Helen, are 93 and 94 years old, respectively, and live happily in their own homes on opposite ends of Loudoun County. Both were very active in their community for many years, along with their husbands, both of whom have passed on.  Both Helen and Lillian reached out to Caregivers in 2008 for help with getting to doctor appointments and support. With-in a month, both Helen and Lillian were matched with wonderful, caring volunteers for medical transportation and friendly visits.  The volunteers who have met and helped Lillian and Helen have told us what beautiful people they are, and how helping these ladies has changed their own lives for the better.

Our volunteers and staff have worked hard over the past three years to help these women with the regular trips and minor chores that we take for granted.  Just having a volunteer check in once a week to see how she is doing has given Lillian great ease of mind.  We have helped Helen twice a week get to and from physical therapy; at 94, she has decided to finally give up her home of over 50 years and move to an assisted care facility.  Caregivers’ volunteers will be there to help her move and to visit her in her new home, as she has become an extended family member to the many people she has touched at Caregivers.

It’s thanks to our many volunteers and donors that we are able to continue to help Lillian and Helen and the many others in our program maintain their health, quality of life and independence. There is a tremendous need for services and our care receivers are so grateful for the help. I know this is a challenging economy for so many of us, but the needs of our elderly and our disabled care receivers never stop.

Our volunteers and supporters tell us they feel blessed to be a part of the organization that allows Helen, Lillian and others like them to remain living independently and thriving. Their enthusiasm for this work is demonstrated in the number of times they provide assistance through Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers.  In the past year, our volunteers have driven  over 63,000 miles and volunteered almost 7,000 hours. Wow!
