The students of the Loudoun Literacy Council have stories to tell, and they want to share them in English.

Like Kim--just months after arriving in the U.S. from Vietnam, Kim's abusive husband abandoned her and their three children. She worked laboriously for 15 years to provide for her kids, working long hours and low paying jobs. She also battled depression and breast cancer. She spoke little English and had limited writing skills.

Today, Kim meets weekly with a volunteer to improve her writing. She can talk in English, but it is through writing that she is truly finding her voice.

An adult’s literacy level touches every facet of their life. For immigrants coming to the U.S., a command of English is vital to personal success. All of the students of the Loudoun Literacy Council understand this and continue to improve their skills—like Kim—and she is 70 years old.

The Loudoun Literacy Council provides programming for adults, children, and families by engaging a network of over 200 volunteers. Our trained volunteers teach classes for adult English language learners (ELL) and provide individualized tutoring in ELL, adult basic education, and citizenship. Volunteers also provide literacy enrichment for the most economically disadvantaged children and families through weekly reading circles in Head Start classes and homeless shelters, family book parties, and book gift packs for a-risk mothers and their babies.

Literacy empowers. For 31 years, the Loudoun Literacy Council has been empowering entire families and changing lives through learning.
