Our mission:

The mission of the Louisville Asset Building Coalition is to build a brighter future by providing access to trusted financial services and resources with a focus on low to moderate-income individuals.

What We Do How and Why: 

We focus on two main programs: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (V.I.T.A.) and financial education for youth.

Since 2001, V.I.T.A. has been our key service, helping over 80,000 families in Louisville access about $34 million in Earned Income Tax Credits. We aim to ensure these families get all the credits they qualify for by partnering with local organizations to provide essential resources.

To do this, we run multiple tax sites from January through April, often seven days a week. We aim to have a VITA site within 1 mile of 90% of Jefferson County zip codes where the median income is $50,000 or less. We partner with community centers, companies, and churches to make this happen.

We also offer financial education workshops for young people, covering topics like budgeting, bank choices, and basic tax returns to help them build a strong financial future.

Our Impact:

“I think the LABC is reliable, trustworthy, helpful, and necessary. Imagine if you had to pay the grocery store to use an EBT card, that's exactly the way the tax return system is set up for poor people and why VITA sites are imperative. Tax credits (esp the EITC) are one of the major tools used to combat poverty in our country, VITA sites make sure that access to those poverty-fighting funds are available without a price tag attached, which is how it should be!!” -an 18-year returning VITA client and father of 4

A Few Highlights From The Last Year

1. For the 2024 tax season over 8,800 returns were prepared free of charge.
2. We hosted 6 Financial Savvy Classes where a total of 113 youth 12-18 years old learned crucial finance skills.
3. 15 locations hosted 128 volunteers this tax season which is around a 40% growth rate for the previous season!
