At the Louisville Nature Center, we encourage playing, exploring, working in and learning about nature. Our mission is to be a catalyst for conservation through environmental education and connection to nature for every person.
Forest Restoration
LNC maintains 80 acres of forest, including the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve, through trail upkeep and repair, removing invasive species, and planting native species.
Nature Education
LNC offers countless points of connection to nature for all people, ranging from outreach programs in schools throughout greater Louisville and Indiana, summer camp, field trips, Swallowtail Forest School, and public programs, including fall Owl Prowls, Night Hikes, Beginner Birding, Gray Tree Frog Hikes, Salamander Seekers, and more!
Swallowtail Forest School
At Swallowtail Forest School, children have the opportunity to explore nature at their own pace. Our half-day programs are entirely play-based and student-led, guided by caring teachers who encourage curiosity in the outdoors. We take pride in providing an environment that is safe, welcoming, and fun, where children are free to play, learn, and grow.
From running wild in the Nature Play Area, slipping and sliding down the mud hill in the Forest School classroom, to discovering the intricate flora and fauna of Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve, each season holds something special for those wishing to learn about nature.
The Louisville Nature Center offers recreational and educational opportunities to individuals in Metro Louisville and surrounding areas. The Louisville Nature Center is free and open to public year round. Our hiking trails, sensory garden and the nature play area are open daily from dawn to dusk. The visitor center and bird blind are open Monday - Friday 9am-4pm.
Thousands of students in Jefferson County attend our education activities each year. Individuals of all ages can enjoy hiking on the trails, picnics and viewing the gardens throughout the year. Many community organizations use our buildings and grounds to hold meetings and other public events. Each season holds something special for those wishing to learn about nature or just enjoy watching the forest and grounds unfold with the change of seasons.
Your generous support of the Louisville Nature Center helps us continue our mission to provide nature education and stewardship in an urban forest. We look forward to seeing you soon.
