Graduation is something we take for granted in the US, but school graduation is not automatic in Honduras. Because of the extreme poverty found especially in rural Honduras, many students are forced to drop out of school to work a full day - or beg for food - just to ensure they get a meal each day.

Lunches for learning exists to break this cycle of poverty in rural Honduras by providing nutritious and balanced lunches to public elementary school children; thereby allowing these children to remain in school so they can complete their education, graduate, and then compete for jobs in the Honduran economy.

Honduras is among the poorest nations in the world with much of the population living below the poverty level, earning less than $2 per day. However, statistics show that a child who earns at least a sixth-grade education has hope for breaking the cycle of poverty because they learn basic reading, writing, and math skills that open future doors. This is the foundation of the Lunches for Learning mission.

We are currently serving lunches to more than 2,200 students in 49 schools in rural southern Honduras. Because of operational efficiencies, Lunches for Learning is able to provide school lunches to a hungry student for the entire ten-month school year for only $150 - allowing him or her to remain in school, complete his or her education, graduate, and enter the Honduran workforce as an employable adult.
