LEARN.
Philanthropic education provides a variety of benefits throughout the lifetime of our students. It teaches our students why, how and what is needed to mitigate the problems of their communities. Many of our students do not realize the severity of the crises our communities face until they meet organizational leaders doing the work. They do not yet realize that even at a young age, commitment and hard work can make a difference. That is what we teach them. And they make an immediate, positive impact by supporting local organizations that fulfill the missions they create. Once our students are empowered with knowledge that they gain in LYPC, they can take it into their worlds and make decisions with a greater understanding.
LEAD.
LYPC is building leadership skills and opportunities in our students. By starting young, we can develop a vibrant pipeline of talent into future nonprofit leaders. Indiana University research (2021) shows involving high schoolers in philanthropy leads to increased engagement. They are 78% more likely than peers to volunteer and 38% more likely to donate. They are also 20%-40% more likely to serve on philanthropic Boards or in leadership positions.
ACT.
In 16 years, we have had 404 students participate in the program, from 33 different public, private and parochial schools in the Louisville area.LYPC has had over 55 different community leaders from the corporate, non-profit and government sectors come to the classes and interact with the students (some returning multiple times over the years!)LYPC student teams have granted $305,000 to 62 different local non-profit organizations.
INSPIRE.
“It is important to give back because I think it's vital to fight for those who can't necessarily fight for themselves. LYPC has given me connections to the community, so now I am aware of the multitude of missions from different organizations. I now feel connected to my community and as though I am making an impact on those around me. LYPC gives students an opportunity to not only connect to the community around us, but lets us know that we are capable of making change at our age.” -Riley Rogers, LYPC Council Member 20-21
