MAYA Organization

A nonprofit organization

MAYA is on a mission to empower BIPOC and marginalized birthing people and birthworkers, and to create positive change in the systems that impact them.

MAYA empowers pregnant and postpartum individuals and incarcerated women. Our doulas, mentors, and counselors are trained to deliver equitable, comprehensive care to the majority Black and Latine clients we serve.

We provide Perinatal Support Services for underserved birthing people, including incarcerated mothers, and group psychoeducation for women incarcerated in Allegheny County Jail. MAYA is also an active participant in the landscape of birth and birth equity in Pittsburgh, and frequently collaborates with partners working to improve outcomes for Black and brown birthing people.

MAYA's services are free and open to all. Our Spanish-language programming serves immigrant populations, and responds to the needs of a threatened community delivering their babies in an unfamiliar medical system. We follow the principles of trauma-informed care, employ proven models for improving birth equity, support birthing people in making their voices heard, and champion program participants as experts in their own lives.

"The experience was incredible. So thankful for Bre's skills that helped me deliver a healthy baby. Excellent advocate and support."

"I truly appreciate everything the doulas did to help me with my delivery and after as well. I would recommend MAYA to anyone having a baby in a heart beat. You guys helped me have a voice and feel like I wasn't alone."

My Doulas Majo and Christy were amazing! I felt very heard and cared for and my partner was heard throughout the labor and delivery process. I couldn't ask for anything more. I would absolutely go back to the MAYA organization and request doula services again."
