Main Street Murals Inc @ Desert Discovery Center

Main Street Murals are the non profit fiscal sponsor of the Desert Discovery Center located in the City of Barstow and in this capacity staff the center and organize the educational and public outreach for over 20,000 visitors per year from across San Bernardino County and around the world.  

The DDC is comprised of a unique partnership between several government, educational, and non-profit organizations.

The Desert Discovery Center is an Environmental Education Center serving over 4,000 k12 students per year from across the San Bernardino County region with FREE hands on environmental, cultural and arts education. 

In addition to the k12 schools program, we also offer a dynamic schedule of programs and events for youth and adults ranging from natural science,  and stewardship programs, animal feeding time, gardening clubs, cultural history presentations and arts programs: Kids Art, Adult Art, Music Jam & a Photography group. Programs are offered FREE or nominal donation.

A native plant and animal habitat is also housed in the garden and pond area where visitors can enjoy the peaceful environment with art installations and meet our rare popular resident desert animals: Mojave Tui chub Fish, Western Pond Turtles and Desert Tortoises. Animal Feeding Time is a daily & free program popular with families, where people and see and learn about the amazing adaptation characteristics of our desert animals.

The Center is also home to the "Old Woman Meteorite", the second largest meteorite found in the United States which weighed 6,070 pounds when discovered in 1975.

Main Street Murals also has a program to beautify and enhance the downtown Barstow area with a gallery of historic murals and a monthly mural program. In addition it also supports educational programs that promote the cultural and historical exploration of the Mojave Desert for k12 students and multiple after school and multi disciplinary classes.
