Manchester Academic Charter School

A nonprofit organization

We foster the dreams of all children by providing an outstanding and dynamic education in a nurturing environment.

ROSO is a system to improve reading capability and long term academic achievement by increasing the amount of reading students do out of school. MACS strongly encourages parents to actively participate in their child's education and create a home culture of academic achievement. Our Reading Out of School Often (ROSO) program is a reading enhancement program developed for MACS by the University of Pittsburgh's Dr. Isabel Beck, Professor Emerita of Education, in collaboration with MACS elementary school teachers. ROSO applies the concept of practice to achieve expertise in a fundamental skill -- reading. Out-of-school reading programs are required and work in elite private schools and higher socio economic communities, while out-of-school reading programs in public schools tend to be weak and fizzle out in lower socio economic areas. MACS' ROSO program has proven to be successful because it has been designed together with the teachers and developed with mechanisms to monitor student
