Manitowoc County Historical Society

A nonprofit organization

Manitowoc County,Wisconsin is about to lose a true historic landmark.  Since 1847 the Meeme House has welcomed weary travelers and today it is in danger.

Located on the old Green Bay Road, the Meeme House Inn began as a trading post handling dry goods, groceries, liquors, and tobaccos.  Michael Herr built the original structure in 1847 as an inn, providing overnight board and lodging for weary travelers midway between Green Bay and Chicago.

The building would make a great addition to Pinecrest Historical Village, a private, non-profit 60 acre historic site receating a village about the year 1900.

The building can also serve as a source of income for the Society and provide funds to continue to preserve our local history.  Space can be rented out for wedding receptions and the century old boarding rooms can be rented by families or groups as “overnight pioneer experiences”.   A large hall upstairs has great potential for many meetings, gatherings, and programs.

Our first step is to secure funding to purchase the property as soon as possible.  As keepers of local history it is our job to ensure that the history of our area is preserved.  We truly are the last line of defense against this historic treasure being razed or altered beyond its purpose.

Our mission is to preserve and protect the history of Manitowoc County.  We are entrusted to keep our rich heritage alive and with your support we can make sure the Meeme House is preserved for future generations.

[With a building of this size, the moving costs and foundation work total more than $90,000.   We expect the total project (with restoration) to cost over $200,000.]
