One in every two men and one in every three women will hear the words “You have cancer” sometime during their life.

Kentucky holds the unfortunate distinction of leading the nation in both cancer incidence and cancer mortality. It is a sobering statistic, but one that we are working tirelessly to change. 

Founded in 1983, thanks in large part to the support and generosity of the Central Kentucky horse industry, the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Markey Cancer Center, a dedicated matrix cancer center and the state’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center. 

As part of the 69-member strong NCI network of cancer centers, the UK Markey Cancer Center ranks in the top 5% of all cancer centers in the United States. NCI-designation means that patients at UK Markey benefit from the newest advances in precision medicine, cutting-edge clinical trials, and collaboration among the best cancer specialist the world over. 

NCI-designated cancer centers like UK Markey are also recognized for their scientific leadership, resources and the depth and breadth of their research. As the anchor for cancer research in our nation, NCI-designated cancer centers are where many of the most cutting-edge advances in cancer research are being carried out each day, and the UK Markey Cancer Center is home to some of the world’s most highly regarded research laboratories and specialists in the country.

Further, the UK Markey Cancer Center was recently named by U. S. News and World Report as one of the top 50 cancer centers in the country.

Quite simply, the UK Markey Cancer Center is where Kentucky goes to fight cancer.
