MATHCOUNTS Manhattan

About MATHCOUNTS:

Some students love math.  Other students fear math. MATHCOUNTS is the place for both.

For the student who loves math, this is a love that must be nurtured.  Math classes aren’t enough.  By joining her school’s MATHCOUNTS Competition Series team, this student prepares for the premiere math competition for middle school students in the United States.  She finds a support network of students who are like her: curious and inquisitive problem solvers.  MATHCOUNTS challenges her and helps her grow.

For the student who fears math, this is a fear that can be overcome.  Math classes are full of anxiety, but they don’t need to be.  This student partners with a few classmates to create a video for the MATHCOUNTS Math Video Challenge.  With the encouragement of a teacher, he joins The National Math Club (a MATHCOUNTS program) where over time he becomes a better problem solver and a more confident student.  He is no longer defined by his fear, but by the fact that he overcame it.

MATHCOUNTS helps change attitudes about math and inspires superior problem solving skills.

About MATHCOUNTS Manhattan:

The MATHCOUNTS Manhattan chapter competition is an annual showcase for the knowledge, skill, speed and teamwork of the top Mathletes from dozens of middle schools throughout Manhattan.

Approximately 400 local students in grades 6-8 will gather on a Saturday in February to represent their schools at the competition.  The fun and creative problems promote critical thinking and problem solving skills in written and oral rounds, with individual and team components. 

After the morning written rounds, students meet their math loving peers over lunch. Participants then learn from experts at an engaging math talk and are captivated by the problem solving prowess of the top 16 finishers during the thrilling live Countdown Round.  The day closes with an award ceremony.  Winners will have the opportunity to advance to the state competition, where they’ll compete for a free trip to the national competition in Washington, D.C. 

Students leave invigorated, with their passion for math amplified.
