Meyer Center for Special Children

When a family visits the Meyer Center, they are filled with hope - and they are not disappointed. Dr. Leslie Meyer, who founded the Meyer Center in 1954, believed that every child, whatever his or her medical challenges, could benefit from education. He was convinced that intensive education and therapy services, provided at the earliest possible age, would give a child the best chance to make progress. 

Children who attend the Meyer Center have diagnoses such as cerebral palsy, orthopedic disabilities, various genetic syndromes including Down Syndrome and marked developmental delays due to prematurity.  Under the care and guidance of expert teachers and therapists, more than 150 children receive life-changing therapy and educational services annually.  They are blossoming, gaining confidence, and achieving milestones that doctors had thought impossible.

Since 1954, the Meyer Center has helped thousands of children. Its innovative program is still the only one of its kind in the Upstate of South Carolina and one of a few in the Southeastern U.S.

Phoenix, a little boy born 13 weeks premature, with a birth weight of just over 20 ounces, has been a student at the Meyer Center for almost two years.  Phoenix’s father, Jason, recently wrote, “We knew from the beginning that our son would have severe developmental delays.  As we struggled to deal with the joys of being new parents and knowing the struggles our son would face, we were thrilled to learn that there was an organization in Greenville designed to help special needs children.  Upon visiting the Center, I was overwhelmingly impressed with the staff, the caring and love they showed each child, and the facility.  Phoenix began attending the Center in 2010 and since that time, my wife and I have witnessed very positive results in our son’s physical abilities and developmental progress.  We expect only greater achievements in the future.”
