Mid Atlantic Food Resilience and Access Coalition

Established in March, 2020, in response to a food system crisis brought about by the Covid pandemic. The traditional supply chain structures that normally connect people to their food broke down, leading to empty grocery store shelves, shuttered markets and restaurants, panic buying, and hoarding.  For those who had been living with food insecurity, in areas with few, limited, or no access to grocery stores, without cars or jobs, and with public transportation shut down, food access went from limited to all but non-existent. At the same time, local farmers who normally sold into wholesale markets saw their markets crippled and faced economic devastation.  

MAFRAC’s vision is to Seek and develop a sustainable an economically viable local food system through relationships with local food entrepreneurs, farmers, local producers and food processing distributors.

Maximizing and offer a replicable framework for quickly identifying, engaging and building a sustainable resilient food network.  MAFRAC is committed to a diversity, equity and inclusion network.  Connecting hunger relief organizations (HRO’s) of all sizes and capacities would be connected to each other and invested in procurement of healthy food from local farms.  The distribution of local foods from farmers to stakeholders to the community will help to build the sustainable food pipeline.  Supporting local producers, processors, distributors, businesses, and laborers will recirculate the dollars into the community, and also resolve the supply chain disruptions to cultivate vibrant local food systems that prioritize health, equity, and sustainability from our farms for the future.
