Middleburg Humane Foundation is a private nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes animals in need and promotes animal welfare through community outreach and humane education. We accomplish our mission through our various programs: intake and adoption, Trap-Neuter-Return, food and medical care assistance, humane education, internships, and volunteerism. MHF is not funded by the government, therefore, we rely solely on community fundraising efforts like Give Tuesday.

The Middleburg Humane Foundation specializes in the rescue and rehabilitation of domestic animals and livestock. The animals in our care enter the shelter from a variety of adverse situations.  All animals are vetted at intake and provided the medical treatment needed to return them to health. Many of the animals that come to MHF require specialized care.  We are lucky to have a state of the art animal medical facility and are currently seeking to hire a veterinarian to be in charge of our clinic.

Middleburg Humane Foundation has a unique setting, situated on a beautiful sprawling 23-acre farm in rural Marshall, Virginia with the Blue Mountains as the backdrop.  This setting has provided our rescue animals a unique rehabilitation experience.  Our animals are cared for by professional animal care staff and treated like family. At any given time there may be horses, cows, pigs, goats, and poultry in our paddocks and in our barn, cats, dogs and pockets animals in our main facility.  There are 8 horse pastures, a state of the art animal medical facility, expert (FEAR FREE) trained staff and volunteers.  MHF also has a grooming salon, furchandise shop, agility course and dog training pavilion all located on the property.   Middleburg Humane Foundation is lucky to have MANY wonderful volunteers.  Our volunteers wear several hats.  They foster animals, answer phones, walk dogs, cuddle with kittens, represent at events, work the resale boutique, nurse neonatal kittens, run TNR clinics, train dogs, do laundry, among many other hats.

In 2023 MHF took in more than 1,000 animals, so far in 2024, we have exceeded that number by 12%.

Through our Trap, Neuter & Return program we spayed/neutered more than 650 cats in 2023, all procedures occurred in our operational in-house clinic.

Our neonatal nursery program, Kitten College, provided care for 351 kittens. Nursing mothers and their kittens and orphaned kittens found outside are brought to the shelter, vetted, then placed in foster care for socialization. Once the kittens "graduate from college" (i.e., become socialized) they are available for adoption.

Middleburg Humane Foundation stands out based not only on their unique setting but also unwavering love for animals.

Testimonials

"Well the journey begins again. 28 years ago I went on a rescue with Middleburg Humane Society. I requested to adopt this beautiful Appaloosa pony. She was 7 months old at the time. She has brought joy to our family from the day we brought her home. I was notified by a friend there was a horse up for adoption at the MHS possibly children friendly. I decided to start a new journey with my 3 granddaughters and my friend Leslie. We adopted 3 ! Horses that all need start up training again and a lot of love and kindness. All 3 were surrendered because the families could not afford them or seizure due to neglect. Enclosed are some beautiful photos of my beloved Misty now and then with my children and now my granddaughters. I am hoping these new horses will bring knowledge and love to my granddaughters just as Misty has done. ..family enjoy photos of Violet. She loved going to the horse shows" -The Chapman Farm

"I am sending Ashley praises for remembering me and making the call and she was spot on providing my family with a perfect cat." - Melanie Marks Hitchen
