2015 is the 20th anniversary year for the African American Community Health Advisory Committee!

Through our affiliation with Mills-Peninsula, the African American Community Health Advisory Committee (AACHAC) has explored new ways to meet health needs across generations and diverse communities for 20 years. By sharing knowledge for life through our programs and services, we have influenced the important health decisions of more than 15,000 individuals and saved thousands of lives each year:

  • Soul Stroll: Our premier event promotes healthy lifestyles with a one, three- and five-mile course, free screenings, and accessible health information. Held each May, this year it’s May 16 at Coyote Point Park.
  • Men’s Health Symposium: A full day of activities open to men throughout the Bay Area, this awareness building event includes health screenings for prostate cancer, kidney disease, HIV, cholesterol, glucose, and blood pressure.
  • Women’s Health Conference: What started as an event focused on breast cancer among African American woman has expanded to provide information about a range of issues, including domestic violence, heart disease, diabetes, mental health, financial security and more.
  • Health Screenings: We work with area churches to provide flu shots and screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose throughout the year.

More of our programs: Off to a Good Start; Mental Wellness; Dementia/Alzheimer’s Awareness; HIV/AIDS Awareness; Disaster Preparedness; Stress Management; Youth Anti-Bullying, Nutrition and Physical Activity; and Programs for the Spanish-Speaking and Pacific Islander communities.

Here’s what our donors say about the work we do:

“In the Bay Area, we have access to the top medical professional and research initiatives. AACHAC brings that information to members of underserved communities. They become educated about what they can do to safeguard their health – and they get that information in a culturally competent manner. The impact AACHAC makes is phenomenal.”

~ Lisa Tealer, Senior Diversity Manager, Genetech

“You don’t have to be rich to support AACHAC. This isn’t something we can leave to the government. They don’t know what the community needs. You have to feel that [causes you donate to] are right. Where AACHAC’s concerned, there’s no question about credibility.”

~ Evelyn Neely, AACHAC supporter

From our beginnings 20 years ago, AACHAC has grown from an all-volunteer organization to one that is the go-to resource for improving health—a center of excellence others consult when they want to reach or work with communities of color. With your help, we’ll continue to make a difference and plant seeds for a healthier world!

Every donation made through Mills-Peninsula Hospital Foundation during SV Gives Day will go to AACHAC.
