Mindful You provides programs that offer opportunities for open dialogue around the impacts of technology, specifically social media, on youth mental health.
We do this through school school wide literacy nights as well as student and parent workshops
Literacy nights feature children's picture story book, Screen Time. Screen Time touches on the themes of anxiety and depression in relation to exposure to social media on their phones. Many of our young people today can identify with the themes in Screen Time in our current social climate. It was recently reported by the U.S. Surgeon General that young people who spend more than 3 hours a day on social media face 2 times the risk of anxiety and depression symptoms, with the average usage of adolescents being 4.8 hours as of Summer 2023.
Mindful You programming looks to impact overall student well-being by addressing their relationship with technology and social media as well as supporting students in healthy decision-making. Mindful You encourages students to be able to resist negative social pressure, and understanding how technology influences their behavior.
Schools can partner with Mindful You through 3 different activations throughout the course of a school year from August-June. First they can sign up for a book reading. Here they receive 45 copies of the Screen Time book, a live interactive book reading of Screen Time, discussion and reflection with students around the importance of healthy relationships with their technology devices, while also learning about the brain science and the impact of social media on our brain. Additionally students will learn and practice breathing exercises, learn about mindfulness and the 7 mindful skills, healthy decision making, as well as encouraging reading and recreational activities outside of technology use, including benefits of being in nature. Book readings last for 2-3 hours and work in tandem with the second offering of Parent Workshops. Mindful You works with parents on how they can continue to reinforce healthy decision making and behaviors when it comes to technology in the home. The final program offering is a follow up event that teachers can do in their classrooms or Mindful You can facilitate with the school. To promote self expression and build confidence, Mindful You has a program called #WriteNow. During this program students are able to explore more of the mindful skills, understanding how stress and anxiety impact their brain as well as their overall self image, confidence, decision making, and peer relationships. During the #WriteNow program students will have the opportunity to express how they see themselves by telling their own story using storyboards and creative expression through illustration and writing. The end goal of the #WriteNow program is for students to submit their individual stories to be compiled into a book that can be housed in their school or community library. As a result of participating in all of these programs, young people will report that they have increased self confidence, they feel a stronger sense of connection to themselves and their community, increased critical thinking, and resisting of negative social pressures as a result of less screen time and how overall interactions with technology influences their overall wellbeing and behaviors. Mindful You is excited to bring awareness around the impacts of technology devices and social media to young people across the Bay Area.
