The MJO Hope Foundation (MJO HOPE), a California based 501 (C) (3) nonprofit organization is in Monrovia, California, a city within The County of Los Angeles. MJO Hope Connect service boundaries include 88 cities stretching across Southern California, covering 4752 miles. Currently we serve 2600 nursing home residents living in 13 nursing facilities with an additional 20 nursing facilities, low income seniors and 500 spinal cord injury patients signed up for advocacy.
The MJO Hope Connect Technology Department oversees the design, purchasing and implementation of our smart health program that educates and connects all families to their residents while simultaneously advocating for the upgrade of the 1987-98 Nursing Home Reform Law that includes a smart technology standard for healthcare in nursing across the United States.
Our program’s design strategy includes the following upgrades to nursing facilities:
Our Goals
To raise awareness about modern technology upgrades for our nursing facilities and provide nursing home residents an immediate smart technology device that offers a quality of care solution to help prevent them from becoming more isolated is our goal. To increase the number of smart devices placed in the hands of nursing home residents upon admission by three residents monthly and to increase the number of technology devices given out by five residents will be the success of this project. To show nursing home operators, administrator and their staff how to incorporate program material into their residents daily activity so they can reinforce resident’s self-determined confidence about their smart skills more than once a week will increase participation levels like never before. To educate the families that by sharing their knowledge of smart technology with their nursing home family can cause a smart fun family involvement and sending flyers home with the resident’s Smartlife accomplishments to put on their refrigerators will be a reminder to make a weekly video chat a must. To provide family members with the information they need to understand that visiting loved ones in the 21st century does not have to cut into their daily work schedule and how to visit just became easier is a welcoming change.
MJO Hope Board of Directors, Government and private donors have been working to increase awareness about the importance of preventing isolation in nursing homes in future generations, so program grants related to this topic are not uncommon. Future funding could also be provided by donations and/or fundraising events such as smart technology sales. Some funds will continue to be obtained via in-kind contributions from corporations and private donors.
At the end of 2018 MJO Hope was fortunate to receive Pro Bono legal help from the Orange County Law Center and The Salesforce Legal Department to resolve Nursing Home HIPAA compliance requirement that we face currently or into the future. Their collaboration along with Everyone.org ensures that we can go forward in tackling nursing home loneliness and isolation helping to minimize the growing epidemic in the United States, especially for low income families. This program will work towards preventing this epidemic from getting worse for future generations by having professional Smartlife Coaches spend time with nursing home residents via Zoom/Microsoft team platforms at nursing facilities to teach them about being healthy living with smart technology. It is important to teach residents about a smart technology standard of care, physical health and wellbeing as early as possible in order to prevent the Isolation epidemic to spiral even further out of control.
Americans need to act today to prevent Nursing Home Isolation and all the health issues that come along with it.
Thank you,
Team MJO HOPE
