Who We Are

The Montour County Historical Society serves as the caretaker of three historic museums in the Danville area, preserving the places and stories that define Montour County’s heritage.

The Montgomery House, once home to General William Montgomery and built in 1792, is furnished to reflect what the household may have looked like in the early 1800s, featuring pieces of original Montgomery family furniture. Exhibits throughout the home include pottery, period fashions, Native American artifacts, and decorative arts. The house also preserves the Montgomery Collection, including a rare invitation to George Washington’s White House. A second-floor bedroom is dedicated to Abigail Geisinger, displaying a portrait of her in her twenties along with original furnishings that reflect her legacy.

The Boyd House houses one of the largest military collections in this part of Pennsylvania, with displays of firearms, photographs, uniforms, and artifacts representing every U.S. conflict from the Revolutionary War through modern times. A highlight of the collection is the personal archive of Charles W. Eckman, of Company H, 93rd Regiment, who was wounded three times during the Civil War. The Boyd House also chronicles Montour County’s industrial story—from its iron heritage to its canals, businesses, and manufacturing—through photographs, artifacts, and firsthand accounts.

The Mooresburg One Room Schoolhouse remains one of the few surviving period schoolhouses in the region, preserved as a fully furnished classroom complete with a coal stove and slate tablets, ready for students to begin their day.

The Society is led by a volunteer Board of Directors and sustained through memberships, gifts, donations, and grants. The preservation of these historic sites depends on the continued support of the Montour County community. Guided tours are available on Sundays beginning April 2026, or by appointment.
