Mountainland Head Start, Inc.

We feel privileged that for the past 35 years, we have been entrusted with the responsibility to provide preschoolers in poverty each year, a head start in their education to help them be kindergarten- ready and succeed in school. We currently serve 756 children and their families. We embrace our mission to partner with parents to enable each child to realize his or her full potential. Besides being in poverty, children coming into Head Start have many barriers and face detrimental risks even before they enter the program, which consequently, cause them to significantly lag behind their more advantaged peers. The good news is that with our compassionate, high-quality comprehensive Head Start services, they catch up. 

Head Start remains as important as ever, helping children in poverty get the learning opportunities, nutritious meals, health care, and social and emotional support that they need to enter school ready to learn. The founding principles of Head Start—that disadvantaged children need comprehensive, quality early education to start school ready to learn along with their more advantaged peers—are no less critical today.

Without community support, our Head Start Program could not continue in our service area. We are required to raise community donations amounting to 20% of our grant each year in order to qualify for continued funds, which covers the other 80% of the costs to provide services to children and their families, which is no small sum. We need the help of many in the community to achieve this financial requirement.
