Throughout its history, the History Museum of Mobile has housed and interpreted Mobile’s 300 year history.
School groups account for the majority of the museum’s guided tours. The History Museum of Mobile’s main location offers guided tours that target different age groups. For schoolchildren from preschool through third grade, the museum offers “Eye Spy,” a visual scavenger hunt designed with young learners in mind. During their tour, students search throughout the museum for ten specific artifacts. For older students, the museum offers “Footsteps through Time,” a similar exercise that adds a series of inquiry-based prompts placed throughout the permanent exhibit. This activity was designed to support the Alabama Course of Study for Social Studies and is designed for students in grades 4-12. The museum also offers a regular guided tour of the museum for grades 4 and up as well as adults.
In October 2010, the professional staff at the Museum of Mobile made the restoration of Fort Condé a top priority and set a three-year timeline for completion. The initial phase of this project – long-neglected repairs to the building’s infrastructure – necessitated the fort’s closure to the public for an extended period.
In addition to the restoration, the professional staff elected to redesign the entire facility, transforming it into The Site of Historic Fort Condé, which will serve as both the colonial history wing of the Museum of Mobile and as the museum’s chief educational outreach facility.
The Museum of Mobile, Inc (the 501c3 fund) is hoping to give greatly to the project. The restoration and Completion of the Site of Historic Fort Condé will enable expansion of the exhibitions of early Mobile history, strengthen the overall educational programming throughout the entire museum system, and, perhaps most importantly, implement a plan for Fort Condé worthy of the site’s important history.
The new Site of Historic Fort Condé will include approximately 1,200 historic artifacts. Interactive exhibits in the fort will provide multiple levels of interpretation, which will be facilitated by inquiry–based texts that will encourage a more inclusive view of Mobile’s early history. Classroom space located inside the fort will provide convenient facilities for more in-depth educational programs, teacher training, historical demonstrations, and workshops.
For the first time in its thirty-five year existence, the Site of Historic Fort Condé will present visitors with a fully-immersive museum experience and provide an appropriate introduction to the earliest history of the region. Fort Condé will reopen to the public in the summer of 2013.
We at the History Museum of Mobile recognize the foundational cornerstone that our mission provides for Mobile as a pivotal city in the development of the Gulf Coast reagion. Please join us in our mission ... to Illuminate and Preserve the history of this great city and region.
