Music Changing Lives

A nonprofit organization

9 donors

When we began 13 years ago, we were ecstatic just to have a few supporters and a little space to share our programs with the youth. In more recent years, however, with the addition of our college student volunteers, we have grown into a robust after-school experience. While other organizations have contracted or stopped operations in these challenging economic times, we have grown.

We find this very encouraging!

But we still face challenges, as do many small charitable organizations. One of our biggest challenges is people’s declining interest in social engagement. Some blame this decline on Gen X’s perceived selfishness. Others point to the government’s growing influence on areas that used to be left to charities alone. Some statistics actually show, however, that charitable giving and volunteerism is higher than it has ever been, but is distributed over an ever-growing number of nonprofit organizations.

Whatever the case, it’s clear that we must look beyond our provincial interests and concerns to develop a competitive agenda that meets supporters more than halfway.

The broad-based initiatives unveiled by our board and advisors have shown great promise. As a result, I believe we are just now at the “tipping point.” For example, we’ve challenged the idea that we should

only operate in Community Centers as a rather exclusive “club,” and are now gaining momentum towards putting our programs directly on school campuses.

We are testing this concept through a pilot program in Vista Del Lago High School in Moreno Valley, and evaluating our services through UC Riverside to ensure we reach our goals. Success will require more hard work and a redoubling of our commitment to service and collaboration in the spirit of the MCL’s core values, with the intent to expand those values into a larger, more united community.

I heartily commend the staff and voluteers who have helped bring this year’s success, and humbly thank all the members, contributors, donors, and patrons for their support in helping the MCL reach this “tipping point.”

Now, let’s push it over the hump and Give Big on 11-13-12!

Sincerely,

Josiah Bruny
